The fundamental principle of chiropractic is that the Nervous system plays a major role in the function of a healthy body. If there is interference with this system serious consequences can occur. In extreme cases, one can suffer paralysis. In more subtle cases, which Chiropractic refers to as a subluxation, there is some level of nerve interference, without major breaks in the spinal chord; with consequences to the health and function of the body. The challenge for the Chiropractor is to find these subtle areas of interference and gently remove them by various means of “adjustment” so that the interference is removed and normal bodily function can be restored.

The Doctor of Chiropractic has studied the medical sciences, nutrition, as well as various diagnostic methods, including X-rays, laboratory work, and physical therapy modalities in order to help the body heal itself The course of study is four years of Chiropractic school and another 2-4 years of undergraduate school. The basic tenet is that “the intelligence that made the body can heal the body”.

As an example, if we experience a cut, we do not have to think about how we will heal. The body knows what to do. We don’t have to think about it. We may need to clean the area affected, or bandage it, but the body will heal itself. Same if we were to experience a broken bone. If severe enough, a medical doctor may have to place a pin to approximate the bone, but the body will heal itself. Same thinking with subluxations. If they exist and we can remove them, the body will regulate itself and restore itself to health.
